The Large Hadron Collider
My question is, and this maybe a stupid question but, can you nuke a
black hole. What if the Hadron Collider makes a very tiny black hole, and it starts to grow. would a nuke stop it? nuke Geneva, Switzerland.? |

This non-story is symptomatic of a larger mistrust in science, particularly in the US, which includes intelligent design amongst other things. The only serious issue is why so many people who don't have the time or inclination to discover for themselves why this stuff is total crap have to be exposed to the opinions of these half-wits." -- Am I the only Gareth Slee? http://garethslee.com |

Dear Angelocracy:

What if the Hadron Collider makes a very tiny black hole, It will. and it starts to grow. It can't. Ine less time that it would take these seed particles to go more than a few meters, they have already been seen to evaporate. They are only going to make slightly cooler ones. *would a nuke stop it? nuke Geneva, Switzerland.? Will a hurricane stop the collapse of positronium? No. The only way it will stop the LHC is if you bomb Switzerland before tomorrow. David A. Smith |

There's your clue; it will be a very tiny black hole, vastly smaller than an electron and too tiny to injest matter because it's total mass will be that of a few subatomic particles. It can't grow to begin with. The question here is how much mass will be required to create a singularity that CAN grow, however slowly. Attempting to 'nuke' tiny black holes will just blow them around a little. --Damon |

Firstly, the odds of it forming a stable black hole that doesn't evaporate faster than you can say Hawking Radiation is probably about the same as all the air molecules in your room spontenaously all moving to the left side of the room. And if something like that DID happen... the last thing you'd want to do is add more energy like that. -- Greg Moore Ask me about lily, an RPI based CMC. |
