ASTRO: NGC 6745
Another I wanted more color data on but the clouds had other ideas and
now with the bright moon and still more clouds I've decided to go with what I have. This guy is in Lyra, a constellation not noted for its galaxies. But it is high over head where the #$%@# clouds are the thinnest so it became a target one somewhat cloudy night. This is variously described in the literature as two, three and even 4 interacting galaxies. Actually it is only 2 but the distance of over 200 million light years and the small size of the galaxies involved made it difficult to tell what was going on. It was, before the interaction, one normal spiral plus a tiny dwarf of unknown (to me) type that grazed it. This left the arms of the spiral distorted and rather blue along the path of the graze. The north end (the end nearest the companion that caused all the ruckus) is a mass of giant blue-white stars and can appear as a separate galaxy. So can a knot of new stars in one of the spiral arms. The "bullet" galaxy is seen faintly due north of the bright knot of blue-white stars. Hubble took the definitive shot though the "bullet" is mostly out of frame. http://heritage.stsci.edu/2000/34/index.html I thought this would be one not posted here before but see Stefan beat me to it years ago -- twice In fact this was the first object he ever posted according to my notes. Hard to find one he hasn't yet done! 14" LX200R @ f/10, L=4x10' RGB=1x10', STL-11000XM, Paramount ME Rick -- Correct domain name is arvig and it is net not com. Prefix is correct. Third character is a zero rather than a capital "Oh". |
