Default river rocks ripple through constellation?

All these worries about resonance, and parachute tests and this and
that and then we get something as mundane as:

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/08...dy_crawlerway/

Which is channeling:

http://www.flightglobal.com/articles/2008/08/21/314931/nasa-faces-budget-busting-crawlerway-rebuild-for-ares-v.html

Just another instance of the insanity of the heavy-lift fetish.

I seem to recall that the crawlerway was resurfaced after every launch. I
thought the Crawler Transporter crushed the rock and new rock was simply
placed over the crushed rock; the figures in the article look like the
original specs for the crawlerway, without any additions in the past 40
years.

Alas, I cannot find a reference to the frequency of resurfacing, and
while I think it was mentioned there I cannot remember that episode of
"Dirty Jobs" where Mike Rowe changes the grease and gets to drive the
beast.

http://science.ksc.nasa.gov/facilities/crawlerway.html

suggests that the part which is crushed - the river rock, sits above a
layer of asphalt, which is above other stuff:

Depth: Average depth is 2 meters (7ft)

0.8 meters (2.5 ft) hydraulic fill, 0.9 meter (3ft) graded
limestone, 0.3 meters (1 ft) selected fill, asphalt sealer;
10.16-20.32 cm (4-8 in) of river rock on top to reduce surface
friction.

That being the case, I would guess that (finely) crushed rock probably
washes away after the (frequent) Florida rains and is not actively
building-up even if NASA weren't actively removing old rock and
putting new on top of the asphalt.

And after this week, most of it might be half-way to Miami.

Agreed, but I do recall an article from a few years back about them
replacing the stone for the first time since Apollo. Or something like
that.

There's two layers of rock. IIRC the upper layer is substantially
replaced/regroomed after each traverse, and it was the lower that was
recently replaced.
