According to an article in the Economist the shuttle won't fly till
2010, as the investigating commision says the shuttle has to have a
re-flight worth inspection down to the last bolt.

The Economist, whilst a gripping read for long-haul flights (no,
honestly), has never struck me as necessarially the be-all and end-all
of aerospace news sources.

(More to the point, unless the workforce now consists of three men and a
dog, I suspect that even if they did strip all three orbiters down to
the last bolt and reassemble it wouldn't take them seven years...)

There is a degree of literal truth - one of the recommendations does,
indeed, say they should deal with the SRB separation bolts [R4.2-1], and
I suppose those of us of a poetic turn of mind could call them the "last
bolts", but...

Ah, here's what they're probably referring to - R9.2-1.

"Prior to operating the Shuttle beyond 2010, develop and conduct a
vehicle recertification at the material, component, subsystem, and
system levels. Recertification requirements should be included in the
Service Life Extension Program."

You will, however, note that this is not a return-to-flight constraint;
it is, indeed, constrained by the year 2010. Saying that you have to
stand everything down until 2010 because one of the recommendations says
you have to do something before then does smack, a little of not paying
attention.

[I won't ask you to read the report, so here's an executive summary;

Christopher at first my opinion of you was steadly improving, but lately you
are saying some of the most stupid things possible. Why don't you use
resources written by experts in the field of interest? There are all sorts
of aerospace magazines and space-oriented websites, but you pull your comment
from a economic(money) magazine. Such a magazine would make sense if you
were talking about budgeting, but you are talking about inspections. Do you
really think it will take longer to inspect than to build a new one from
scratch? You are not thinking. Also since the ISS is up there, there is no
way that NASA or the USA is going to wait seven (7) years before flying
another shuttle. A year or two maybe, seven years no.

I bet you feel better now you've got that off your chest. BTW in
usenet the only opinion that matters is your own, as this little world
is only a discussion forum.

So someone dreamed the Columbia loss?

No, someone had to dream up the design first.
