I keep reading about how people used to say the steam engine travel at
speeds of over 40 MPH,.....would kill people.

My OP had the qualifer "So Far ...", BUT I strongly suggest that you
don't hold your breath waiting for anything that goes near or
certainly exceeds c. There's strong theoretical reasons why that could
never be, and never any aliens visiting us so far !
