Russo-Aussie venture to challenge Virgin?
It appears there's a challenge to Virgin Galactic, being done by a
Russian-Australian joint venture. Cute little spaceplane involved. From AFP's article on Yahoo (http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20051011/sc_afp/russiaaustraliaspace_051011150829) quote Tue Oct 11,11:08 AM ET MOSCOW (AFP) - Firms based in Russia and Australia are reportedly jointly developing a system for launching small satellites from a high-altitude airplane carrying a cheap, disposable rocket. /quote /dps |

Where is there any mention of tourists. This is like saying a trucking company is competing against a taxi company. Diffirent markets. Earl Colby Pottinger -- I make public email sent to me! Nowhere in the article text is anything about tourism stated. The M-55 (also featured in the picture) is however explicitly mentioned. One suspects that that picture with the spaceplane is just the first file photo the clek found. D. -- Touch-twice life. Eat. Drink. Laugh. -Resolved: To be more temperate in my postings. That carrier aircraft has an interesting history behind it- it's an evolved version of an aircraft called "Subject 34" or "Chaika" (Seagull) designed to destroy high altitude reconnaissance balloons that the CIA was sending over the Soviet Union by using a remote-controlled dorsal gun turret or missiles against them. It then became a high altitude reconnaissance plane before it's present incarnation. It well be interesting to see how the spaceplane gets attached to it, as the fuselage sits very close to the ground, and launch from the top of the aircraft is probably not a good idea due to the position of the horizontal fin on top of the vertical stabilizers. You can read up on the Chaika and the balloons he http://worldatwar.net/chandelle/v4/v4n1-2/balloons.html Pat |

That shuttle is far too big to be launched by that plane. |
