After reading the story, I think the most likely possibility is that some loon
mailed flour or sugar to them, claiming it was weaponized anthrax.

They wouldn't evacuate over a computer virus, and solar observatories don't deal
in secrets (the notion of an apocalyptic solar flare is too remote to take
seriously).

If true, makes you wonder why someone would target an observatory. Unless it was some kind of enviro-kook or Indian upset. Maybe the scope is on some kind sacred land? That's been an issue with other scopes, or its presence threatened a frigging red squirrel.

Might be related to some cyber security issue. A lot of observatories
like this are on a dedicated, very high speed subnet of the broader
Internet. Maybe somebody used it inappropriately.

In any case, the FBI isn't talking.

Would seem to be the most likely reason. I've read there are a number of sensitive military installations nearby.

What does that mean? Do you understand that the nature of computer
networking makes proximity irrelevant?

"AURA has been cooperating with an on-going law enforcement
investigation of criminal activity that occurred at Sacramento Peak.
During this time, we became concerned that a suspect in the
investigation potentially posed a threat to the safety of local staff
and residents. For this reason, AURA temporarily vacated the facility
and ceased science activities at this location." --Gizmodo

AURA says that the facility reopened today, September 17.

I agree with almost everything that you have said and almost everything that
you will say in your entire life.

Of course. But a snot nosed Russian hacker in a grey Moscow building may have thought Aura seemed an official enough target given the location.

Appears the mystery is ended.

The dismal thing is that a NASA technician sitting at a computer desk by manipulating imaging can do more damage to the intellectual wellbeing of a nation than any foreign hacker.

Trying to diminish other nations as rogue while right in the middle of a nation is an academic community acting in the most irresponsible way imaginable.
