Our robot slaves of 1965
Otto Binder shows us the future as seen from 1957...even "Magnus, Robot
Fighter" didn't have as odd of things in it as the two shown in the illustration, which would have fit right into "The Fifth Element": http://blog.modernmechanix.com/2008/...laves-by-1965/ Not that although the Cook Robot "Steela" has brought him breakfast, she hasn't brought him a chair to sit in while eating it. The Valet Robot "Jingles" has a design that suggests in 1965 we will all have six-foot-wide doorways in our houses. Note also those air intakes at the base of his wheel attachments, suggesting Jingles is powered by a gas turbine APU, which is going to make the domicile a bit noisy and leave it smelling of JP-4. But there are Pol-Robs in this future also, hopefully more forgiving than Gort, and less treacherous than Magnus' H-8. But all these pale before that thing that's going to melt the snow off the sidewalks with atomic heat, leaving a strip of red-hot radioactive concrete behind it. Gardening will also be easy for this Robot Caretaker, as weeds don't grow well in soil that has been fused into a sheet of radioactive obsidian by his passage. Notice anything missing from all this? Say the wife and kids? One assumes all their functions are now being performed by robots also. "Honey, don't you think you were a little rough on the Robot Beaver last night?" :-) Pat |

He was just before my time but I grew up with an older brothers huge comic collection, and Magnus was a favorite. |
