planisphere for light-polluted skies?
I just wandered over to Sky and Telescope's web site, and found an ad
for their Night Sky planisphere, which I assume is different from their Sky and Telescope planisphere, probably in containing fewer of those confusing stars and things. The web page for the Night Sky planisphere says that it's especially useful for beginners under light-polluted skies. Aha, already very enlightened. Well, what would be the ultimate in planispheres for light-polluted skies. I'm sure you can imagine. Actually, I had already created, for my son's fourth-grade class last year, a planisphere with just the very basics. You can find it at http://astro.isi.edu/notes/planisphere.pdf It contains a few of the better-known constellations and asterisms: Big Dipper, Summer Triangle, Leo, Orion, Canis Major, Taurus, Gemini, Scorpius and Sagittarius, Cassiopeia; it also has the ecliptic printed on it. It's nothing you can't find anywhere else, but perhaps it will be of some use for kids since it has fewer of those confusing stars. For those of you who aren't living under light-polluted skies, here's a more effusive free planisphe http://cp.c-ij.com/english/3D-paperc...archart_e.html -- Brian Tung The Astronomy Corner at http://astro.isi.edu/ Unofficial C5+ Home Page at http://astro.isi.edu/c5plus/ The PleiadAtlas Home Page at http://astro.isi.edu/pleiadatlas/ My Own Personal FAQ (SAA) at http://astro.isi.edu/reference/faq.html |

For those interested in other planispheres (though I still have some 15+ more to add to the page "one of these days, time permitting"): http://thadlabs.com/ASTRO/Planispheres/ |

For those interested in other
planispheres (though I still have some 15+ more to add to the page "one of these days, time permitting"): http://thadlabs.com/ASTRO/Planisphere s/ Thanks! That's a neat bunch of planispheres! I've managed to accumulate most of the common ones from the 1890's on up through the 1950's. When one gets into less common ones, or older ones than that though, the prices tend to get, well, a little too astronomical for me. Marty |
