This is some exciting stuff. Ice opens up the possibility of ISRU (In-
Situ Resource Utilization). In other words, LOX and LH2 for propulsion.

To me, Ceres would make a far more interesting initial target for
SLS/Orion than the asteroid retrieval mission. Gravity on Ceres is
quite small 0.27 meters per second squared compared to earth normal 9.8
meters per second squared gives 0.028 as the fraction of earth gravity
(i.e. far less than the moon). So a lander for Ceres would need far
less delta-V than a lunar lander.

The tough part, of course, is getting there. It's further out than
Mars, so travel time would be longer. A quick web search indicates
launch windows every 15 months and a 15 month one way trip time.
Combine that with a 15 month stay and you have a mission duration of 45
months or about 4 years.

Jeff

"the perennial claim that hypersonic airbreathing propulsion would
magically make space launch cheaper is nonsense -- LOX is much cheaper
than advanced airbreathing engines, and so are the tanks to put it in
and the extra thrust to carry it." - Henry Spencer
