rather than have the government spend money FOR us.

A better comparison would be government projects no sane individual
would want to spend money on. Most of them get zero press, no there
little outcry. One of my favorites: last I heard, there are two
full-time federal employees whose job is to teach farmers how to grow
crops - in Las Vegas.
