Stanford Torus rendering & question
I'm trying my hand at making some 3D models of classic space habitat
designs. My first effort can be seen he http://www.strout.net/info/science/s...enderings.html This is based on a NASA painting from the '70s (linked from the page above). But one thing puzzles me about the original painting: where are the radiators? Would a habitat of this size need to have substantial radiators to get rid of excess heat? (I'm assuming those purple things spread between the spokes within the mirror ring are solar panels.) Thanks, - Joe |

Stanford Torus rendering & question
But one thing puzzles me about the original painting: where are
the radiators? I THINK this picture captures the radiators on a torus. However, I'm currently blocked from zooming in on the picture. http://www.dyarstraights.com/msgundam/STANFORD.GIF The fins at the end of the long tunnel coming off the hub (Fig 1a) are the radiators: http://spaceset.org/p.train6.html http://www.olympus.u-net.com/torus.jpg Note the 4-way "solar panels" of the Bernal Sphere (Fig 2) are also radiators. Would a habitat of this size need to have substantial radiators to get rid of excess heat? Absolutely. Mike Miller, Materials Engineer |

Never mind -- since sending this post to the moderator, I noticed the radiators in the painting -- a dark reddish square sticking out away from the "camera" from the central stalk on the back side of the habitat. They're almost edge-on since they're pointing directly in line with the sunlight, as one would expect. Best, - Joe |
