I didn't know that. Separate, but with no possibility of being different? Choosing some other person to be sovereign is not impossible, just very difficult because it would require constitutional change and probably legislation too. |

The descendants of these Americans became known as Americo-Liberians and currently make up only 5% of the population. The country's indigenous people come from 16 different ethnic groups, which have struggled with the government and among themselves throughout Liberia's existence." Pat |

There's also the discontinuity of the North-West Angle and the rest of CONUS. Purchasing Manitoba would fix that. Certainly the secessionists thought so... snip Odd though it seems from today's perspective, there were a good many racist abolitionists: they were opposed to slavery on moral grounds, or thought it degrading to the whites involved, or believed it unsustainable and dangerous... but did *not* see blacks as the equals of whites, or believe that a color-blind society was either practical or desirable. OM wrote: ...Which is essentially how Liberia came about under Monroe. The idea was to give Americanized negros a new homeland they could return to where they could continue their own now-somewhat unique culture in freedom. What became rather interesting is that far more freed blacks in the US at that time were *seriously* reluctant to return to Africa for pretty much the same reason any immigrant would have: even though they're treated like second-class citizens, working on a plantation/Kwik-E-Mart is still far more preferable to being eaten by lions, tigers or the tribe next door. Not to mention yellow fever, tsetse flies, malaria, guinea worms, and all the other fun things that live in Africa. I found it interesting that the former American slaves started running the place while viewing the native tribes of the area as their inferiors. Obviously, the concept that contact with the white man would bring civilization to the black man was correct. ;-) Pat |
