STS-127 scrubbed
Yes, listening to the press conf, I think all are puzzled by the hydrogen
leak again, in that same place, which is allowing hydrogen to accumulate inside the outer part of that disconnect. As was mentioned, the last time it occurred it had also been on a vehicle which had had it mated and demated. They never found a cause before, yet something is going on. Weird. I was under the impression that "scrubbed" applied when cancellation happens when launch procedures have gone beyond a certain point and require they be undone (for instance, if ET is fueled, it needs to be drained). Postponed would be more of schedule change and they may not need to undo any of the preparations done so far. (unless they need to roll it back to VAB for fixes). |

STS-127 scrubbed
I do not know the origins, but I've had many meetings 'scrubbed' by emails
saying that very word. It is intriguing how scrubbed has come to mean the current operation has been scrapped but may be occurring at another time. On www.nasa.gov/shuttle the term 'posponed' is used... can somone tell me the difference? "Scrubbed" I think comes from World War II Army Air Force, when the day's mission/target would be written in chalk on a blackboard for air crews and the like. If weather or some other factor caused the mission to be cancelled, the blackboard would be wiped off, or "scrubbed". Launches that are aborted for weather or technical problems have been called 'scrubs' since at least the Mercury days. Launches that have been totally abandoned, such as STS-41E are generally just called "cancelled missions". Brian |
