The Second U.S. Naval Observatory CCD Astrograph Catalog (UCAC2)
I just obtained 3 CDs -
The Second U.S. Naval Observatory CCD Astrograph Catalog (UCAC2) - of some 48,330,571 stars, and the freebie software was written in fortran (it's from the military). Does anyone know of any OTHER software that will read the files? Perhaps something more friendlier? I hate to have waited all this time and not be able to access the info... Thanks! lucyh at dhimaging dot com dot au |

Thanks! lucyh at dhimaging dot com dot au Assuming you have the FORTRAN source, it would be fairly easy to read the data in just about any language, then dump it to something like a MySQL database and access it with a PHP web page. Though from the question I would assume you are not a programmer and the path of least resistance would probably be to set up a Linux machine and just use the existing FORTRAN interface. -- Jim Pennino Remove -spam-sux to reply. |

Does anyone know of any OTHER software that will read the files?
Perhaps something more friendlier? HNSky will read/show them. jc -- http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/jc_atm/ --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). Version: 6.0.726 / Virus Database: 481 - Release Date: 22/07/2004 |

I just want to output them to a CSV (Comma Seperated Value) or TAB delimited
file, and then import them into either an SQL or Access database. The CD's are free - there's FORTRAN source code on the CD. The data format/structure is on there, but when I open the files, they LOOK binary.. Any kind, smart individuals out there feel like writing a little program and just open this file for input, open a new file for output, and read, then write and give me a header on top of the columns? I really do not know what else to do... Any help would be *greatly* appreciated. -Joel "John Carruthers" wrote in message ... Does anyone know of any OTHER software that will read the files? Wasn't it no way who wrote:

If you prefer C++ to FORTRAN, there's a C++ program that does something similar to this at http://www.projectpluto.com/ucac2bet.zip It outputs the data fields separated by multiple spaces, like the following, except that my mail program has wrapped each original long line into three lines of text. UCAC2 ID RA dec Rmag RAepoch decepoch s_RA sd #o rf #c cf pmRA pmdec epr epd qpr qpd 2massid Jmag Hmag Ksmag 2mph 2mc 0 28.50131028 51.78109444 14.84 2002.104 2002.340 18 15 2 00 2 01 45 -29 37 37 20 20 931184455 13.796 13.403 13.327 000 000 0 28.50290111 51.83046000 14.31 2000.120 2001.926 33 20 3 00 2 01 1062 154 38 37 20 20 931184614 13.486 13.167 12.996 220 000 To change this into CSV or TAB delimited, you'll need to change the fprintf statements. -- Mike Williams Gentleman of Leisure |
