While the twist in Clarke's story shakes the faith of one man, the theme of "The Sparrow" is that the Jesuits are seeking to contact a new civilization without repeating all the terrible mistakes made when they did that in the New World. But history repeats itself. |

If we ever launch interstellar probes, it will almost certainly be using nuclear powered electric propulsion technology. |

Probably not a manned mission, but robot probes are a possibility. It may be that the Oort cloud would make such a journey hazardous. If a probe hits some space junk, we'd just send another probe, or maybe send out several at once figuring that at least one will make it through. |
