Default Opinion on Orion Star Diagonal?

I don't know you or your scope, but my guess is that neither better
eyepieces nor a better diagonal is going to make a whole lotta difference.
What does make a huge difference is good optics, sufficiently acclimated,
well collimated, good seeing, dark skies, and a practiced eye(s). There are
junk eyepieces and diagonals out there, and they should be replaced.
However, I have never experienced a big difference in the image quality when
switching from inexpensive but good quality eyepieces/diagonals and premium
ones. There are benefits to the high-end ones, but these do not include any
great improvement in how stuff looks in the center of the eyepiece. If this
image is unsatisfactory and the scope is acclimated, collimated, etc then
the only way to get better views is to get a scope with different/better
optics.

Excellent post, Dennis. And although there are some who do see very
subtle differences in such equipment, and they are willing to pay for
those small improvements, I think most of us are in the same boat as
you.
