How old must a male/female be before libido is no longer high enough to result in unwanted advances or innuendos on other crewmates ? Look Troll, forcibly sticking one's tongue into another person's mouth is not "innuendo" or an "unwanted advance". It's requires a forcible assault. As an experiment, why don't you go up to a woman (or man) you know only casually and forcibly stick your tongue into their mouth. Hopefully that will not only take you out of circulation for a while, it'll impart an important life lesson. When you're out on bail you can report what you've learned to us. Would they have to select crewmates with 0% tolerance for sexjokes, or would they have to select crewmembers for whom the threshold for "sexual harassement" is much higher ? This is where filtering for intelligence and maturity really comes into play: in any social situation one learns how to gauge when sexual jokes are okay, the situations flirtation is acceptable and where it is not acceptable. One also learns when to quickly back off and when to apologize for placing another in an uncomfortable situation. None of that maturity and learned respect for other's private space was exhibited by the offender or his apologists. Denying that humans have biological and phychological needs is stupid. One can temporarily hide those issues through "professionalism", but eventually such problems will arise. No one is denying that people have sexual desires that need to be considered. Unfortunately you're too busy being an apologist and a troll to actually render any useful insight into that problem. Define "incompetence" ? Making self-serving decisions that could jeapordize a mission would classify as incompetence. Assaulting another crewmember in order to gratify oneself indicates incompetence. I am more worried about a male who doesn't flirt with a unattached female than one who does. So your definition of "socially inept" is not unanimous. Forcible physical contact isn't flirting. You shouldn't use terms you don't know the meanings of. |

"you know only casually". We are talking about a group of people living together in small confined spaces for possibly over a year here. Not going up to someone you know only casually and sticking your tounge in her mouth. Nobody is saying that the guy had a right to sexually harrass the girl. And in a DisneyLand environment where everything is perfect, this would have never happened. And what is also important to consider is that while Krikalev/Sheppard/Gidzenko didn'T kill each other even though they were confined to Zarya/Zvezda for a couple of months, those months had plenty of activities for them to do all the time, and they weren't watching plants grow or crystals form, they were activating oxygen generator, assembling a kitchen table so they could eat, prett basic survival stuff. This was more of a scouting expedition setting up a camping site. On a mars ship, will they really have much to do that rally matters to keep them occupied during those 6 months ? If they don't have life critical tasks that fill up their time, this greatly increases the risks of social problems. So, putting those people in tins cans in that russian experiment may in fact reflect better problems in a mars expedition if the crew members don't have that much stuff do do that is really important during the day. (or if the daily "janitorial" jobs such as hygiene, exercise, food etc. take up so much time that they become really tired/bored of the routine) Can there be an authority figure in a small mars expedition crew, like there is on a submarine ? Does punishement have any meaning on a mars expedition ship ? What happens when it is the captain/authority figure who is attracted to the female and the female isn't interested ? (replace this with any activity which would not be tolerable). Should they operate as two separate crews working 2 shifts ? This give the opportunity to break up feuds by shifting people from one shift to another, reducing contacts betwene people who are incompatible with each other. |
