I am looking at the new Google Earth program and it is spectacular. There is absolutely nothing stopping the developers putting the North and South poles in relation to the circle of illumination thereby announcing the arrival of a new surface rotation to the public, a rotation that has been going on for many millions of years and with daily rotation is responsible for the seasons.

All the unimaginative dopes stuck in the late 17th century may not see the possibilities but this is for our era.

That is a clip accurately showing the retrogrades of Venus without phases, so you do not "accept" it.

That clip also does not show phases, so even by your mad standards it should be "unacceptable".

But the really comical thing is that Venus is not in retrograde in that clip at all. It is moving directly across the star background throughout, just at varying speed.

What you need to do son is get someone else who has already clued into the fact that phases dictate the planetary loop of Venus observed from Earth and as that involves alternate motions against the background stars (including retrograde motion) so if you are following a graphic where the Sun is 'outside' the planetary loop of Venus then you are either ill or perhaps astronomy is not your thing -

Another nuisance could draw an analogy to the motion of Jupiter's satellites around the parent planet and apply it to Venus as it runs its circuit around the Sun and if he can get it then anyone can -

At least you brought graphics to the thread but even I feel uneasy with the fact that your only purpose in this forum is that you attach yourself to my comments. The material is meant for narrative development and especially the Earth's own orbital input which delays the actual time Venus completes a circuit and the major component is the transition of the background stars from an evening to morning appearance thereby setting the Sun up as a central reference for the phases and in turn into the proof of circuit/loop of the inner planets.

For those who can mesh phases with retrogrades the insight will open up as something new in the partitioning between the inner and outer planets by perspectives and not even Galileo got that one -

"Now what is said here of Jupiter is to be understood of Saturn and Mars also. In Saturn these retrogressions are somewhat more frequent than in Jupiter, because its motion is slower than Jupiter's, so that the Earth overtakes it in a shorter time. In Mars they are rarer, its motion being faster than that of Jupiter, so that the Earth spends more time in catching up with it. Next, as to Venus and Mercury, whose circles are included within that of the Earth, stoppings and retrograde motions appear in them also, due not to any motion that really exists in them, but to the annual motion of the Earth. This is acutely demonstrated by Copernicus . . " Galileo

You can tell when Gerald has no answer to a post when he starts addressing you as "son".

That clip shows an actual path of a planet wrt the stars and you do not recognize it because you do not understand what the retrogrades of the inner planets look like. You imagine that they look like the paths of the moons of Jupiter. You are wrong.

Or, if your understanding is so wonderful, please let us all know when the next Eastern elongation and retrograde of Venus will happen. Why will the retrograde not begin on the date of elongation? Why will it end before the following Western elongation?

What is the time period between the beginning of one retrograde and the next? Why is it not equal to one orbital period of Venus? Of Earth? How is it related to these?

You are in good company with the rest of the contributors to SAA but in this case the observed motions of the inner planets gauged against the background stars work with their phases to generate a picture of a planet moving faster than the Earth is about as easy as it gets, perhaps not as easy as discerning outer planetary retrogrades/direct motions but enjoyable nonetheless.

I look forward to seeing a development of graphics and imaging to complement the satisfying resolution which splits the perspectives apart . Already there is a graphic which shows Mercury swing out to its widest point and then turning in front of the Sun with its creators having a full sense of its importance -

Maybe you can get someone else to explain it to you but you have taken up too much of my time.
