Default Question for Starlord

First of all win the state Lotto ;} ( Dreaming I am )

First of all ( here I go again ) the head gaskets, when I at last removed the
drive side one, WOW, it's a wonder the engine ran! the gasket between two cycl's
was gone, totaly, so the compression from either one was just flowing into the
other one, no wonder my gas milage was so poor, bet if I could have lit a match
by the tail pipe I'd had rocket power! And by the last cylc' between the cycler
and the water jacket, the gasket was gone, that's why both heads had water in
the clcy;s. So I need to get a set of Head gaskets for this 71 ford 390 engine,
also a set of Intake manafold gaskets too, the ones on that didn't blow threw,
but hard rule of engines is replace one, replace all.

The biggest and most costly tool, will be a Torque wench, if I don't torque down
the head bolts when they go back on, the head gaskets would blow right away.
I've got to ask the guys up at the parts place what the foot# is for them.

I've been using some emery cloth to take some of the crud off the head surface
and kind of lightly horn the worst cycl, it had a slight ridge of rust, this
head gasket has been on the edge of going for a long time, me putting that new
rad cap on just did the trick.

I've got a bunch of Godzilla sound files ...

Default Question for Starlord

I don't know what kind of rebuild experience you have Starlord so please
don't take this question wrong.

Have you determined What caused the head gaskets to blow? Usually there is a
issue with the surface plane of either the heads, (usually) or the block
(rarely). Granted it is and Old engine and it could just be wear & tear.
Better to figure in a machine shop for Fluxing (checking for cracks) and
planing (grinding to level) the heads to be safe before reassembly.

I understand all to well the low finance issue, but some things are worth
scraping cash together for when doing any major R&R on an engine. I would
hate to see you go to all that trouble to have it come apart again. I have
been there and it can be Very depressing. Granted I was only 16 at the
time, (45 now), I have been thru this however and had it happen because of
Not spending the extra effort.

Also with the engine that tired I have seen the main or rod bearings go
right away because of having the top end fresh put extra load on the tired
lower end. Would the option of a fair condition used engine be a possibility
for the beast if funding was arranged? As in do you have the ability to do
the R&R where you live?
