Default Delta IV Launch - Wow

Boeing may be in trouble with the Government, but it sure
knows how to put on a show. Tonight's third Delta IV launch,
the first during daylight, was waayy cool with the slooowwwwly
rising rocket, the startling flashes caused by ice shedding
and RS-68 nozzle ablation, and, finally, the odd sight of
a rocket racing away without a smoky trail behind it. The
ground tracker camera image seemed especially sharp. Was the
range using a new tracker in the wake of the STS-107 problems?

Nice pickies. I'm still surprised by the colour of the exhaust flame - I
expected blue 'cause of the propellants, but the ablative liner _reeeely_
does ablate with sparks and all!

The upcoming Delta IVH ought to be interesting to watch. Bigger than
a Titan 4B but without the brilliant burn of solids and the fast climb
off the pad.

Yeah, Shame it looks like its been delayed until 2nd Quarter 2004
according to http://www.spaceflightnow.com/tracking/index.html

"
The Heavy configuration uses three Common Booster Core stages strapped
together to form a triple-body rocket.

The rocket is already at Cape Canaveral. It heads to the launch pad later in
the year.

"We have some work to go get the pad all activated for the Heavy," Delta
program manager Dan Collins said. "The three Common Booster Cores have been
mated in the Horizontal Integration Facility and we are looking forward to
mating the upper stage to them and rolling it (to the launch pad) this fall.
"

Damnit - anyone know of any pics of this -it just sounds so EMENSE !!

Haven't seen any yet, but it sure will be immense. And it'll look funny,
too, with those two huge strap-ons hanging in mid-air on either side of the
core and transporter as it rolls to the pad.

Florida Today had a graphic a couple of years ago showing outlines of
the two EELV's in comparison to the Shuttle, a Titan 3D (although they
captioned it as a Titan 4), and a Saturn V. Assuming the graphic is
to scale for all the LV's shown, the Delta 4H is taller than the
Shuttle stack and about as wide if the Shuttle wingtips were excluded.
The Common Booster Core side boosters were shown as both tall and
wider than the Shuttle SRB's.
