Huge Chinese subscale model terrain map as spotted by satellite:
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/07...ngtan_mystery/
I. don't know; are they figuring out a way to miniaturize troops and
want them to practice on the terrain they are going to invade while
being only a few millimeters in height, so they are ready to go again
once they return to normal size? :-)
On the 1-10 "odd" scale this baby's running a solid "9".

A method of training soldiers how to relate map data to a real
landscape?

Actually, I think the scale is 500:1.

Maybe of some place on the China-Nepal/India border???

For future reference, the mystery map is at 38.266 N , 105.950 E .

Did the satellite photo show anyone wearing a Godzilla or Motha costume
nearby? Maybe China is making pirate Godzilla movies?

If it is for aircraft orientation training, I wonder if the Chinese might
have used Google Earth for the same purpose -- at much less expense!

OK, the "what" seems to be that this is a subscale representation of
the Aksai Chin region. The long east-west lake in the middle is
Pangong Lake, real-world coordinates 33.75 N , 79.09 E .

See

http://www.cifjkindia.org/legal_docs...docs_007.shtml
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aksai_Chin .

Now as to the "why", one can only speculate...

How though, exactly? If you go walking around in it you'll hurt the
model, and there doesn't seem to be any obvious point to observe it from
the air near the model.
I can think of one possible use, but it's fairly way-out: With padded
shoes on, crew put tiny models of people and military equipment on the
model at various places. A photo is then taken from an aircraft of some
sort (helicopter?) flying over the model which mimics the resolution of
a Chinese reconsat. This photo is then used to train Chinese satellite
photo interpreters in how to recognize things on the ground in a
controlled manner.

North Korea made a Godzilla-type movie:

It starts out cute, but so did the Ymir:
