....There's an error here I intend to notify Mark of in the morning.
Nelson graduated from JR Ewing HS in Dallas. There's a big statue of
him on the front lawn, holding a funny bottle in one hand and his hand
beckoning to the stars.

"Group: Phantom Cosmonaut" ???

Surely Healey & Nelson merit a "Phantom Astronaut" group after all their
years of service?

Astornautix has a "Phantom Astronaut" category,
how about a "Bogus Astronaut" category?

Has anyone ever heard of Jerry Whittredge? ;-)

"We make Dinosaur Soup with Mammoth bone..." that ring any bells?
It's been stuck to the bottom of my mind like chewing gum for all these
years...apparently the Mammoth bone is used in the production of Mock
Dinosaur Soup.

No, then they'd have to add John Glenn to the group. ;-)

I'd nominate John Young, after all before he was an astro he did set a
record in an early model F-4 Phantom

Interesting, how the nature of public enthusiasm underwent a sort of a
shift from Mercury to Gemini. During Mercury, it seemed like they were
gladiatorial heroes of some kind -- Tom Wolfe refers to them as
"Single-Combat Generals" -- but as Gemini got into full swing, the
prospect of _two_ guys flying together suddenly made it seem more "human",
like two buddies on a road trip, or, as we saw in the mid'60s, the basis
for a comedy team, the premise for a sitcom.

I'd always wondered if the writers for "IDOJ" did any research at all into
how the Astronaut Office functions, how crewmen were chosen and teamed-up
for Gemini missions; I think we can be fairly sure that Slayton didn't
slate Gemini crews based on comedic chemistry, or whether Dick Gordon
would've been a good "straight man" for Pete Conrad.

--
"All over, people changing their roles,
along with their overcoats;
if Adolf Hitler flew in today,
they'd send a limousine anyway!" --the clash.

Or, in the case of Schmidlap and Hoffman at the Lunar base, two people
ready to kill each other the first chance they get.
Hoffman to NASA: "I got up today and said 'Good morning, Schmidlap'...
and he knocked all my teeth out."
Cut to Schmidlap, frantically drawing sketches of women's buttocks while
curled up like a rat in the corner.
