NASA Center for AeroSpace Information (CASI) NASA-TN-D-1057; H-221 , 19610701; Jul. 1961 The approach and flare maneuvers for the first 30 flights of the X-15 airplane and the various control problems encountered are discussed. The results afford a relatively good cross section of landing conditions that might be experienced with future glide vehicles having low lift-drag ratios. Flight-derived drag data show that preflight predictions based on wind-tunnel tests were, in general, somewhat higher than the values measured in flight. Depending on configuration, the peak lift-drag ratios from flight varied from 3.5 to 4.5 as compared with a predicted range of from 3.0 to 4.2. By employing overhead, spiral-type patterns beginning at altitudes as high as 40,000 feet, the pilots were consistently able to touch down within about +/-1,000 feet of a designated point. A typical flare was initiated at a 'comfortable' altitude of about 800 feet and an indicated airspeed of approximately 300 knots., which allowed a margin of excess speed. The flap and gear were extended when the flare was essentially completed, and an average touchdown was accomplished at a speed of about 185 knots indicated airspeed, an angle of attack of about 7 deg, and a rate of descent of about 4 feet per second. In general, the approach and landing characteristics were predicted with good accuracy in extensive preflight simulations. F-104 airplanes which simulated the X-15 landing characteristics were particularly valuable for pilot training. http://ntrs.nasa.gov/archive/nasa/ca...1998390469.pdf Document ID: 19980227282 Updated/Added to NTRS: 2005-05-17 ===== Preliminary Base Pressures Obtained from the X-15 Airplane at Mach Numbers from 1.1 to 3.2 Saltzman, Edwin J. NASA Center for AeroSpace Information (CASI) NASA-TN-D-1056; H-215 , 19610801; Aug. 1961 Base pressure measurements have been made on the fuselage, 10 deg.-wedge vertical fin, and side fairing of the X-15 airplane. Data are presented for Mach numbers between 1.1 and 3.2 for both powered and unpowered flight. Comparisons are made with data from small-scale-model tests, semiempirical estimates, and theory. The results of this preliminary study show that operation of the interim rocket engines (propellant flow rate approximately 70 lb/sec) reduces the base drag of the X-15 by 25 to 35 percent throughout the test Mach number range. Values of base drag coefficient for the side fairing and fuselage obtained from X-15 wind-tunnel models were adequate for predicting the overall full-scale performance of the test airplane. The leading-edge sweep of the upper movable vertical fin was not an important factor affecting the fin base pressure. The power-off base pressure coefficients of the upper movable vertical fin (a 10 deg. wedge with chord-to-thickness ratio of 5.5 and semispan-to-thickness ratio of 3.2) are in general agreement with the small-scale blunt-trailing-edge-wing data of several investigators and with two-dimensional theory. http://ntrs.nasa.gov/archive/nasa/ca...1998390461.pdf Document ID: 19980227195 Updated/Added to NTRS: 2005-05-17 ===== Analysis of a Pilot Airplane Lateral Instability Experienced with the X-15 Airplane Taylor, Lawrence W., Jr. NASA Center for AeroSpace Information (CASI) NASA-TN-D-1059; H-225 , 19611101; Nov. 1961 An analysis is made of a lateral-control problem in which the pilot, through normal application of control, induces divergent oscillations in bank angle. The problem, first encountered on the X-15 simulator and later confirmed in flight, is explained through the use of root-locus plots of the pilot-airplane combination in which the pilot is represented by a human transfer function. A parameter is developed which is useful for predicting the lateral-control problem and for showing the effect of the principal aerodynamic and inertial parameters. Also, means of determining regions in the flight envelope where the pilot-airplane would be susceptible to lateral instability are developed. http://ntrs.nasa.gov/archive/nasa/ca...1998393624.pdf Document ID: 19980227835 Updated/Added to NTRS: 2005-05-17 ===== Aerodynamic-Derivative Characteristics of the X-15 Rediess, H. Measured flight temperature data and observed structural damage resulting from shock impingement and interference heating on the airplane and its ablative coating were analyzed in the light of hypersonic wind-tunnel results. The best approximations of the flight results were made by increasing the undisturbed pylon leading-edge heat-transfer coefficient by a factor of 9 and the undisturbed heat-transfer coefficient in the two interference zones by a factor of 7. The calculated effect of increased heat transfer due to interference n radiation-equilibrium temperature is presented for selected hypersonic cruise conditions. NASA Center for AeroSpace Information (CASI) NASA-TM-X-1705; NAS 1.15:X-1705 , 19690301; Mar 1, 1969 Heat transfer measurements were obtained on the X-15 airplane from two flights under quasi-steady conditions at a freestream Mach number of 5.1 and an angle of attack of 2.0 degrees, and a freestream Mach number of 4.98 and an angle of attack of 16.3 degrees. These measurements were made at corresponding freestream Reynolds numbers of 2.45 x 10(exp 6) and 1.31 x 10(exp 6) per foot. Experimental heat transfer coefficients derived from temperatures obtained from 200 recording thermocouples on the skin of the airplane are tabulated. Correlations with wind tunnel results show that the wind tunnel data are in fair to good agreement with the flight data obtained on the wing, ventral tail, and vertical tail at low angles of attack but are generally in poor agreement with high angle of attack data and the low angle of attack fuselage data. M.; Webb, L. D. NASA Center for AeroSpace Information (CASI) NASA-TN-D-6748; H-668 , 19720301; Mar 1, 1972 An experimental temperature probe package containing a fluidic oscillator temperature probe and a shielded thermocouple temperature probe was tested during several X-15 flights. The X-15 flights provided greatly varying test conditions, including a wide range of rapidly changing total temperatures and Mach nubers which extended from subsonic to hypersonic speeds. Within restricted ranges of free-stream Mach number, free-stream unit weight flow, and local stagnation pressure, both probes yielded ramp outputs of temperature parallel to ramp inputs of free-stream total temperature. Within these ranges both probes were used to determine total temperature in the Mach 6 temperature environment. Because ambient temperature was known, both probes were used to estimate velocity and Mach number. K.; Jewell, W. F. NASA Center for AeroSpace Information (CASI) AD-A277031; NASA-CR-2144 , 19721201; Dec 1, 1972 Available information on weight and inertia, aerodynamic derivatives, control characteristics, and stability augmentation systems is documented for 10 representative contemporary airplanes. Data sources are given for each airplane. Flight envelopes are presented and dimensional derivatives, transfer functions for control inputs, and several selected handling qualities parameters have been computed and are tabulated for 10 different flight conditions including the power approach configuration. The airplanes documented are the NT-33A, F-104A, F-4C, X-15, HL-10, Jetstar, CV-880M, B-747, C-5A, and XB-70A. NASA Center for AeroSpace Information (CASI) NASA/SP-2000-4518; NAS 1.21:4518; LC-00-038683 , 20000601; June 2000 It is a beginning. Over forty-five years have elapsed since the X-15 was conceived; 40 since it first flew. And 31 since the program ended. Although it is usually heralded as the most productive flight research program ever undertaken, no serious history has been assembled to capture its design, development, operations, and lessons. This monograph is the first step towards that history. Not that a great deal not previously been written about the X-15, because it has. But most of it has been limited to specific aspects of the program; pilot's stories, experiments. lessons-learned, etc. But with the exception of Robert S. Houston's history published by the Wright Air Development Center in 1958, and later included in the Air Force History Office's Hypersonic Revolution, no one has attempted to tell the entire story. And the WADC history is taken entirely from the Air Force perspective, with small mention of the other contributors. http://ntrs.nasa.gov/archive/nasa/ca...2000075022.pdf Document ID: 20000068530 Updated/Added to NTRS: 2004-11-03 ===== end |
