Well, if he thinks a space initiative is going to prove to be a great
distraction for the masses, he should get some new political advisors.

The mystique of manned missions to the planets will always remain. However,
an automated heavy duty exploration system would be more useful. The
excitement of manned missions and the can do attitude of the
Mercury-Gemini-Apollo era is not there, especially the space culture has
dwindled.

The alternate energy program was squashed by the oil barons. Do you believe
the oil cartel barons look fondly on oil independence?

The space program is not petroleum dependent. Go HYDROGEN ECONOMY. or
natural gas. BUY a hybrid car. Support alternate fuel economic stimulus
programs. Be active in political debate but not on this newsgroup.

I doubt it has anything to do with oil. It is much more likely related to
the most populous nation in the world declaring they are headed there too.

Sure.

Since they know we will eventually run out of oil and who is in a better
position to supply the NEXT source of energy.

A good company corners the market on their current product and works to
corner it on the next ones also.

Exactly. The fact some of the big oil companies are at the forefront of developing
'alternative' energy is one of the best hints that
(pick from the following)

1. Oil is running out.
2. Human driven climate change is worrying them.
3. Present or future /legislation/ about human driven climate change is worrying them.
4. They think they can get 'nice points' by pretending (2.).

Just how much is this return to the moon gonna cost?!

This president is rather cavalier with the monies he spends.

I wasn't aware the definitions of 'cynic' and 'ignorant' had been
swapped. Thanks for the news.

Maybe you haven't filled your tank lately, but the war had the
*opposite* effect on gas prices.

Next...

I'm wondering the same thing.

Also, what launch vehicle do they propose to utilize?
