Elektron repair attempt fails

Had the shuttle not been gounded for years because of Columbia, would this software then be many years late and NASA having to stop assembly process because the software to control the new hardware wasn't ready ? No. The OGA hardware was always planned to go up near the end of the assembly sequence. In the pre-accident manifest, assembly complete would have been around the end of this year or early next year, so the OGA would have been launched around this time, just ahead of the software. Or is this a case of the software having been ready years ago, but won't be uploaded until more modules are sent up ? No. Like I already said, the OGA hardware was ready but wasn't supposed to go up until much later in the assembly sequence. Relative to the current assembly sequence, the hardware is early and the software is more-or-less on time. -- JRF Reply-to address spam-proofed - to reply by E-mail, check "Organization" (I am not assimilated) and think one step ahead of IBM. |

Elektron repair attempt fails
Jim Oberg wrote: Spare parts installed, Elektron still has bubble-trouble, planned activation for tomorrow now on hold (that 'could happen', Navias says, despite 'chronic problem' of bubbles in the line). Navias assures listeners that 4 months of oxygen is on board the station -- 'no shortage of oxygen on board the station' -- but that's not the issue and he knows it. Without a functioning Elektron, there is no reliable CSCS option for the Discovery crew. Jim Oberg, What about the oxygen that Discovery will carry for ISS replenishment and the oxygen onboard the next two Progress spacecraft (in the tanks and more SFOGs). Won't this help increase the oxygen level sufficiently? i_s_s_alpha |

Elektron repair attempt fails

Horse****. Regardless of the performance of, or even the existence of, anyone elses unit - the performance of Elektron is abysmal. Well, it certaintly requires lots of maintenance. Certaintly not a "turn it on and forget about it" device. Nut abysmal compared to what ? There is nothing to compare it against. Consider the possibility that the USA device ends up being even more unreliable and that even after years of trying to debug it, the USA machine sis tsill as unreliable as the russian one. In such a theoretical case, the russians owuld no longer look like incompetant twits incapable of making Elektron work reliably since the americans would have had equally dismal results. If, on the othert hand, the americans do succeed in making their O2 generator extremely reliable (or are able to debug it and make it reliable within 2-3 years), then the russians will truly look incompetant. This is why one must wait to see how the US O2 generator does before passing judgement on the russian unit. Ah... Now we see your motive. You are cheerleading the all-singing, all-dancing Russian chorus line. No. I am just saying that there is nothing to compare Elektron against. Until there is, you cannot accuse Russians to be incompetrant. You can state that Elektron has low MTBF and high maintenance requirements. But nobody is in a position to compare the Ruissians with others. Horse****. The status of Elektron is the same *regardless* of the existence or performance of anyone elses unit. Consider research on Fusion reactors. Are the various projects around the world all incompetant because they haven't yet been able to cause a fusion reaction that is reliable and generates controlled amounts of emergy that are greater than energy requirements to cause it ? Some things are very difficult to get working. For you, an O2 generator on earth is very simple. but in 0G, things get really complicated. Bubbles don't rise in liquids. |
