Former astronaut and senator John Glenn and his wife are in fair condition
in a Columbus, Ohio, hospital after being injured in a car accident, a
hospital official said on Saturday.

Glenn, 85, and his wife, Anna, will be released later on Saturday, said
Louis Tejada, a nurse administrator at Grant Medical Center in Columbus.

"He's in fair condition," Tejada said. The Glenns were admitted late on
Friday night after the crash.

Columbus police could not be reached for comment, but the Columbus Dispatch
newspaper reported that Glenn's car collided with another Friday night on
the northeast side of Columbus.

Glenn was the first U.S. astronaut to orbit Earth. He was elected U.S.
senator for Ohio in 1974 and retired in 1999.

and his wife were taken to a hospital with minor injures after being
involved in a car accident, police said. Glenn, 85, and his wife, Annie, 86,
were in fair condition early Saturday morning at Grant Medical Center, a
nursing supervisor said.
The driver of the other car, Amy Myers of suburban New Albany, said she
was driving east late Friday night when Glenn, who was headed west, tried to
turn left onto a highway ramp.
Myers, who was not injured, said her car hit the front of his.
Glenn was "very sincerely sorry," Myers said.
Glenn, who served in the Senate from 1974 to 1998, first made headlines
in 1962, when he piloted the first manned orbital mission of the United
States. He went back into space in 1998, at the age of 77.

Remember in 1971, when John Glenn was riding in the Indy Pace Car? It
crashed into the track press stand and injured 19 people. Send him back
into space where he is safe.

Getting hit by a shopping cart when you are 85 may cause
injuries. I wonder what kind of "car accident" it was?
People break real easy when they are 85.

One wonders if it is indeed more safer to travel in space than to drive
on earth.

Here is a link that has a video report from Columbus, Ohio's TV 10. It
shows Glenn's automobile on a tow truck and Glenn strapped down and
being wheeled on a stretcher.

The accident happened on Morse Road near I-270. Police say Glenn
turned in front of a woman while trying to enter 270 southbound.

Glenn was taken to Grant Medical Center on a stretcher after
complaining of some pain. Police say the airbag in Glenn's car
deployed, hitting him in the chest. His injuries, however, were minor.


Glenn's wife was also in the car. Police say she is fine, as is the
other driver involved."

Isn't it kind of strange that someone who's in "fair" condition gets
released that fast?
Anyway, it's good to know that they are going to be okay; it would be
pretty ironic if someone who went around the Earth at 18,000 mph in
something the size of a phone booth got killed in a auto accident...ay
least Gagarin got killed flying a jet.
I still remember seeing Friendship 7 at the Smithsonian Air And Space
Museum.
Looking at that tiny thing, my first thought was "you've got to be
_****ing kidding_".
Those Mercury astronauts were some mighty brave guys. :-)

My grandparents, about 10 years ago (which would put them in their 70s I
believe) got hit and rolled their minivan.

Walked away without any major injuries. Amazing what seatbelts can do.

versus the fatality rate?
That would actually be fascinating to know.
