Default Does buying used - like off of eBay - make sense?

I am looking to get back into casual viewing; taking a chair and some
snacks and gaze at the Moon and local Planets and other 'things in the sky'.

Does trying to get more bang for the buck equate to buying used online
at all?

Might there be a used telescope market, perhaps at swap meets and/or
areas setup at get togethers?

I am asking of people who have experience with such purchases and any
gotchas that might have come up.

Thx in advance.

Buying used makes a lot of sense.

Buying off eBay makes no sense.

eBay is good for books, collectibles, and stuff that's not all that
important. Buy your used telescope and accessories from someone you know or
from www.astromart.com.

Ebay has some decent deals, but overall, it's a wasteland
filled with trashscopes from toy sellers and fraud.

I've had good experiences both buying and selling on eBay. But
my eBay astro trading has been limited to simple items like=20
finders or less expensive eyepieces.=20

Oh, I'll say it, too. Astromart. You can usually get nice deals on used
stuff there. And yes, buying used does make sense (and cents).

Good to see you over here from RAMVW-

Chris

Hi,

To give you some reassurance, I have purchased about 25 astro items
online, anything from accessories to entire scope setups. Likewise, I
have sold nearly as many. I use both eBay and Astromart. Both are
safe IMO, just do your homework and ask questions if purchasing. I
have never been burned using my ask many questions rule. In general,
more-than-often, I am finding better deals online than anywhere
else...

But I'll admit, if I can't find a used item and in good shape or if
the new price is basically the same as the used price, then I will buy
new of course. But new probably only makes up 15% of all my astro
purchases to-date...

Best,
