Enormous hole around moon on 09/02/06
Hi everybody
Tonight in clear skies I saw an enormous 'hole' around the moon. The hole was kilometres wide and was perfectly spherical in shape, at the 'edge' of this 'hole' there was a 'thick halo'. I have never seen anything like this and attempted to get a picture as a record, but to no avail. I currently live in Ukraine, and the 'hole' was visible there at 9.30 CET Does anybody know of an event like this, if so, what was the 'hole', how was it created etc. |

It's probably a "moondog" or lunar halo, an effect of moonlight hitting ice crystals in the upper atmosphe http://www.spacew.com/gallery/image004574.html They are fairly common here in North Dakota USA. Uh, did it look like this? http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap000515.html The hardest part about these things is trying to describe just what was seen... |

Try to get someone to explain why we only see one side of the moon What he saw was a textbook-perfect case of a "moondog" -lunar light being refracted by ice crystals in the upper atmosphere. Nothing strange about that at all, I've seen it myself dozens of times. It's not common, but does occur at the more northern latitudes from time to time. Pat (North Dakota) |
