Default CEV = Project Constellation

Apparently, Sean O'Keefe provided a name during the Jan 28
Senate hearing.

NASA has named the Crew Exploration Vehicle effort
"Project Constellation", a name with both nautical and
astronautical meanings.

I wonder if this means the induvidual craft might get named
after constellations ?

Among the Zodiac constellations, they've got the following choices:

Gemini - They already used that one
Libra - Sorry, no balances and scales in microgravity
Aries - If the vehicle accidentally rams the space station
Leo - If the vehicle gets hit by a Leonid
Cancer - Space radiation experiment
Virgo - No experiments planned for sex in space
Aquarius - If the vehicle lands in the ocean on return
Pisces - See above
Capricorn - Ever see the movie Capricorn 1?
Taurus - There's plenty of bull already in the Bush plan
Sagittarius - Not compatible with inflatable modules
Scorpio - Not bad! Some manned vehicle designs look like a scorpion

I predict they'll use the last one.

Some of the nautical background from two U.S.S. Constellation
web sites:

Constellation No. 1, a U.S. Navy Frigate:

"The first U.S. Navy ship to bear the name Constellation,
for the "new constellation of stars" on the American flag, was
launched in Baltimore on September 7, 1797. Joshua Humphreys
designed the first frigate to be commissioned in the U.S. Navy."

"Rating 38 guns, displacing 1,278 tons, with 164-ft. length
and 40 ft., 6 in. beam, Constellation combined the firepower
of a standard frigate with celerity of a Baltimore Clipper.
Capable of cruising at 14 knots, she earned the nickname,
"Yankee Racehorse.""

Constellation No. 2, a U.S. Navy Sloop of War:

"With plans completed in May and the keel laid on June 25,
1853, just before steam propulsion was adopted as auxiliary
power for all new warships, Constellation was the last all
sail ship designed by the Navy, as well as the largest
"sloop" built to that date.

Constellation No. 3, a U.S. Navy Aircraft Carrier (CV-64):

"After 41 years of commissioned service, and completing
21 deployments, Constellation will decommission in San Diego
at the Naval Air Station North Island on 7 August 2003."

And there is some aeronautical heritage as well - the
Lockheed "Super Constellation" commercial passenger
aircraft, considered by many to be one of the most
attractive flying machines ever built.

I suppose it depends whether part of the vehicle is reusable
or not. Gemini and Apollo crews named their own spacecraft
for each mission. A resuable crew module would need a more
permanent name.

But then, why name them at all? Russia and China do not,
to the best of my knowledge, individually name their manned
spacecraft beyond the basic "Soyuz M1-10", etc..

In another message, I incorrectly said that:

"Gemini and Apollo crews named their own spacecraft
for each mission". I should have said "some" crews
named their own spacecraft. Gemini 3 was unofficially
"Molly Brown", but the names stopped after that until
Apollo 9, when NASA needed a way to differentiate
between separated Command and Lunar Modules. The
initial "Gumdrop", "Spider", "Snoopy", and "Charlie
Brown" eventually gave way to more formal names like
"Columbia" and "Eagle".

I like it. And it harkins back to the other named efforts involving
capsules -- Mercury, Gemini, Apollo -- so I wouldn't be surprised if
they go with a capsule (though I can live with a winged vehicle).

We're not Russia or China.

If the crews want to name their own ships, I say, let them.

(Wonder if a CEV with a Brit crew member will be named Bagle 4.
Beagle 3 and a half? g )
