2004 National Young Astronomer Award

The National Young Astronomer Award (NYAA) recognizes our nation’s high
school age students for outstanding achievements in the science of Astronomy.
To be eligible, candidates must be United States citizens, between 14 and 19
years of age and not enrolled in college on the award deadline. Foreign
students of the same age are eligible if they are enrolled in a United States
secondary school on the application deadline.

To apply, eligible persons should submit application packages by the deadline.
The package will consist of a completed application form, a summary of
astronomy related activities, and optional exhibits (4 copies of package). The
research topic of the 2003 NYAA 1st place winner, Max Moe’s work, was
entitled Demographic and Atmospheric Effects on the Quality of the Night Sky.

The first place winner will receive a Meade 10-inch LX-200 telescope valued at
more than $3000.00. This prize has been made possible by the generosity of
the Meade Instruments Corporation. The winner also receives an all-expense paid
trip to the League's national convention to receive the award.

In addition to other prizes, the second place winner will receive a Meade 125
ETX with tripod and computer controller. The University of Texas McDonald
Observatory presents "Lifetime Passes" to the first and second place winners.
This award enables NYAA winners to share telescope time with professional
astronomers at the observatory. The awards will be presented at the League’s
2004 National Convention in Oakland, California.

The application deadline for this award is January 31, 2004.
