"Rays" emanating from the sun on the LASCO-camera?
On clips from the LASCO-camera on YouTube one can se white "rays"
emanating from the sun. What are they made of? Hydrogen plasma? What is their speed? If anybody knows of an article or book that that has info on this, please share it here! DK |

They are coronal streamers- the same thing seen in white light during total eclipses. They are plasma structures, with elemental abundances similar to the photosphere- about equal amounts of H and He, and slightly smaller amounts of C, N, O, Ne, Ca, Fe, and many others. So not primarily H. The streamers are a major source of the solar wind, so they show velocities of 400-750 km/s, mostly on the higher end (corresponding to the fast solar wind). |
