Default what stand alone DVD player/ recorder will play my planetary AVIs?

Over the years, I acquired quite a collection of planetary AVIs with my
Toucam. Now with the recent generation of supposedly play all DVD players/
recorders, I had hoped to find one that would play these AVIs. I picked up
a RCA model at my local Walmart today. It shows my JPEG images of planets
fine, but still won't play the original AVIs. Are there any, current stand
alone DVD players/ recorders that aren't too expensive that will play my
planetary AVIs?

Thanks,
Eric P

I don't know of any players, but the problem may be the encoding.
See, "AVI" is what's called a container, it is not a format unto
itself. It's possible to - and I've done it - have an "AVI" file
that is either MPEG4, DivX, Xvid, MS Indeo, etc....

So perhaps, if there are DVD players that will play AVI's, your
AVI's are not encoded with the codec that the players recognize.

I think it's best to have them in some form of MPEG, and the
extension may need ot be mpeg as well.

If you want to try converting your files to a suitable format,
google for "BPS Video Converter", which I've found useful.

I agree - the codec used in the original AVI captures is the
problem. Perhaps the easiest method would be to use (any)
DVD-authoring software, which should automatically transcode
the original video streams to MPEG2 - Nero set to produce a
video DVD would work. Otherwise Eric could do as you say
and convert the original captures to a codec that is supported
by his RCA player and then just burn a DVD data disc.
Eric: Check which formats your RCA player directly supports
he
http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers
and also look in the Tools section for software to help convert/
re-encode. I often use "VirtualDub" (freeware) for this kind of
thing.

avi's are composed of bmp images, not jpeg. There's the glitch. Thereis
software that will convert bmp's to jpeg but it must convert many many files to
get motion -

It never ceases to amaze me how all this digital 'stuff' fails to conform to
any
universal standards. Myu dad used to joke about the Russians and their
incompatabilities in manufacturing .... here we are in the same boat
essentially.
Not to mention expense!! Digital is a massive failure imho. I still use film.
