Please read the following with the expectation that I am a novice!

I'm interested in buying a telescope to do a bit of stargazing and
there are various options on ebay which look interesting. Now seeing
as I don't know what I'm looking at (both up above and down below!) I
wondered what a decent starter telescope looked like.

One of the more heavily featured telescopes on ebay is a 6in Newtonian
Reflector:

Ignoring the price for a moment (because that will obviously go up as
the auction progresses), I wondered whether people could give me an
idea of whether the telescope as featured would be considered
"reasonable" in terms of its capabilities, or whether there is
something obviously "missing" which at a later time I wished I had
looked for.

Also a comment about price for that item - would I expect to pay c.
£400 for something like this?

Andrew

Do you need a handyman service? Check out our
web site at http://www.handymac.co.uk

Andrew,

Many new scopes sold on Ebay are of dubious quality at best, and are best
avoided. For £400 you can buy a nice EQ-3 mounted 6" Newtonian of good
quality (like the Helios Explorer 150 I found on www.telescopehouse.co.uk
for example) from a reputable dealer. You might also want to look at
Dobsonians like the 8" Orion SkyQuest XT8 which has a good reputation
(although it's a bit more expensive). Both will keep you happy for many
years.

Before making a purchase, try to visit your local astronomy society to talk
to experienced amateur astronomers and look at (and through) different types
of telescopes to be able to determine which type of telescope suits you
best.

Regards,

Jeroen.

Please read starlord's telescope buyer's FAQ before making a decision...
