Yo guys! --

One thing, one little itsy bitsy thing to remember is that the machines
used to *make* electric cars, plastic, as well as all the *makings* of
all the alternative energy source machines...

r e q u i r e p e t r o l e u m.

The machines require "energy" not necessarily petroleum.

Doesn't have any oil. My bet is on Somalia. What do you think "Black
Hawk Down" was about? Sorry for the OT post.

Jonathan, this subject goes right to the future of astronomy!
Observatories the world over may soon start shutting down
simply because they cannot afford the rising costs of lubing
the moving parts. Space agencies will start closing their doors
because they use oil for both lubing and for energy. Their
budgets will skyrocket when oil becomes scarce. While
alternative energy and lube sources are available, they are not
available in the quantities necessary to support astronomy.

To me, there are few subjects more on topic here than what
may adversely affect perhaps the most important science we
have... astronomy.

Some people would argue with that :-) but it's almost certainly the most
popular science.
I just wonder if this is the right group. The whole point of Usenet is
that there are specialised areas, and this should be going to an energy
group such as sci.energy or one of the alt.energy hierarchy.
Actually, I'd like to think that when the oil crisis really bites we'll
end up with a less polluting environment (less light pollution and crud
in the atmosphere) which will be good for astronomy. OTOH, we'll
probably go through a horrible intermediate phase of coal burning and
tar sand extraction.

Certainly one of several candidates, Bert, especially the fuzzy
balls. There is still the problem of completing the research *and*
of gearing up to meet the future demand. All of this pretty much
requires petroleum now in order to keep costs down.

happy days and...
starry starry nights!
