I had the exact same thing. Some from Postmaster? Allot from MS about patches? Nonsense e-mail addresses with Yahoo? Undeliverable mail you did not send in the first place? I think it is some sort of virus. I changed my e-mail address and it stopped. Norton was highly recommended and I may have to go to Best Buy. Phyloe "G=EMC^2 Glazier" wrote in message ... Bert It's a virus acting like a hacker. Do not open any attachements, especially if you have M$ Window$ of any type. The virus is called W32/Swen@MM and it tends to harvest email addresses from Usenet postings. I had a bunch go to my "munged" address, (with the FFFf in it), until I got to my email server and unset the "anybody" attribute. Also it tends to tell you that your email client is unable to log on to the server and can you please enter your password again. If you've been getting those kinds of messages and replying to them, get in touch with your ISP pronto and change those passwords. I survived the attack fairly well because I use Linux and the virus can't do much on my computer once the bogus messages have been deleted, but it did play havoc with my email for a couple of days. I was helped by the people who host my website, "INET Host" Just thought I'd give them a little plug, cuz' this isn't the first time they've gone above and beyond the call of duty to help me out, and they really know their stuff. My only complaint is that now that the virus is blocked, I'm not getting any email. (:-() whimper, whimper. -- Regards Fred Remove FFFf to reply, please |

Bert,
As a last ditch measure to eliminate spam (even before this latest 'virus' showed up), I did this: Create a second account to use for all private e-mail. Just let let the primary account fill up. Mine is full, with 428 junk e-mails, so it now blocks any more. But let all your regular correspondants know you new addy. See the way I fixed mine -- Anti-spam address: oldcoot88atwebtv.net Change 'at' to@ |

That's where this latest nuisance is grabbing addy's to send copies of the virus disguised as email from a variety of sources. Make sure your newsreader is "free" of all your real account info.... It's been a wild couple of days for me; I've deleted hundreds of these things (without opening them, of course). Maybe you can answer a related question. I'm running Outlook Express on a Win98 machine. I'm trying to block these things by setting up a message rule to delete anything with an attachment. It works fine to move them automatically to my deleted message folder, but I'd like to avoid downloading them to start with. Unfortunately, selecting "don't download from server" as part of the rule doesn't seem to work. In fact, when I create a rule, the first line in its conditions reads "apply after the message is received". By then, of course, it's too late to avoid downloading it. Does anyone know how to get this right in Outlook Express? -- Steve Gray |
