Dawn leaves Vesta behind for Ceres
After about a year, Dawn is on the move again.

Have they not been having gyro issues recently? I just wondered how this
might impact the next couple of years. Brian -- -- From the sofa of Brian Gaff - Blind user, so no pictures please! "Snidely" wrote in message news:mn.fd8a7dc8135b0ee8.127094@snitoo... Dawn leaves Vesta behind for Ceres

Back in January, Marc Rayman posted in the online journal: "To summarize so far, once Dawn has any variance at all between the predicted orbital motion that mission controllers have radioed to it and its actual path, its long wings will be tipped a little while it observes Vesta. In opposing the resultant gravity gradient effect, the reaction wheels will accelerate. When the reaction control system thrusters fire to decelerate the wheels, they will nudge Dawn still more off course, and the cycle will continue." http://dawn.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/journal_01_27_12.asp Skimming the July 25th entry http://dawn.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/journal_07_25_12.asp, I didn't see anything about gyro problems. The June 30th entry is very satisfied with the Low Altitude Mapping Orbit operations, and the move to HAMO2 was going smoothly. /dps -- Who, me? And what lacuna? |
