Default The Name 'Buzz Aldrin' Should Never be Spoken Again!

In my humble estimation.
His ceaseless energy, involvement of obvious love of life, even
more than his past accomplishments, has elevated *his status
to that of a living legend, where a single name ....Buzz of course
is enough.
No matter how many people have the name, there is
still only one Columbus, only one Bono, one Magellan
and now only one...Buzz.

After graduating from Montclair High School in 1946, Aldrin turned
down a full scholarship offer from The Massachusetts Institute of
Technology (MIT), and instead went to the U.S. Military Academy at
West Point. Aldrin graduated third in his class at West Point in 1951
with a B.S. in mechanical engineering. He was commissioned as a Second
Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force and served as a jet fighter pilot
during the Korean War. He flew 66 combat missions in F-86 Sabres and
shot down two Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-15 aircraft. Aldrin was selected
as part of the third group of NASA astronauts in October 1963. He was
confirmed as pilot on Gemini 12, the last Gemini mission and the last
chance to prove methods for EVA. Aldrin set a record for extra-
vehicular activity and proved that astronauts could work outside
spacecraft. On July 20, 1969, he was the second astronaut to walk on
the moon ...

..... pant, pant, pant ... running out of breath.

The man is/was amazing. I just don't know if I would want to sit down
and drink a beer with him though. There is a photo of the Apollo 11
crew apparently at a back yard BBQ in Houston before the historic
flight that I really like. Buzz is using his hands in the photo
telling of some aviation exploits. Mike is laughing ... but Neil
kinda has a smirk on his face and he's looking at Buzz as if saying :
" Oh Jeez ... there he goes again ".

Love ya Buzz. I really do.

If buzz had been first out, I wonder if we would of been to mars long
ago?

Me, too. While there's plenty of ego involved, it's nice to have someone
going around promoting space exploration again.

And that's only the list ending in 1969. The man has since used his
astronaut status to do all sorts of quiet events, rather like how Carter
ended up a quiet statesman after leaving the presidency. If you get a
call from NASA headquarters that one of the men who walked on the Moon
is on the line and wants to talk to you, who in the entire world is
going to turn down that call? Even heads of state of major nations will
drop their agenda in the trash to invite him to come for a photo op and
he gets to have his say each time. When I worked at JPL I saw the staff
scramble at any of his requests and plenty of them were about cross
border issues. Being at JPL the ones I saw were about scientific
cooperation and I never met him in person but his ability to cut through
process any where any time is not to be ignored.

There are similar tales to be told about the international efforts of
Nobel Prise winners and other extremely well know people. Carter did
far more diplomacy than made the news after he got out of office. Much
of the Carribean and Latin America has had years of peace thanks to his
diplomatic visits.

Feynman opened up access to entire regions of the Soviet Union before
the wall fell, and he used his stamp collecting and travelling hobbies
as the surface reason. But the same thing about that phone call
applies. If you get a call from Caltech that a physics Nobel Laureate
is on the line, who in the world is going to turn down the call? He
wants a visa to where? And some sort of cultural exchange program that
will make the entire Societ Union look good? Sure, all he has to do is
stop here in Moscow for a photo op and an authograph to get that visa
stamped.

Given the Feynman events going to Tuva before the Wall fell I understand
that the scientific cooperation stuff I saw happen ended up being about
more than just some scientists talking about telemetry.

The man is/was amazing. I just don't know if I would want to sit down
and drink a beer with him though ...

These days it would be a coffee. Neil Armstrong may be bored by his
tales but I suggest that the average reader of SSP would be happy to
take a few days of vacation to listen to them.
