Free. web.gc.cuny.edu/cepp, 212-817-8215 20:00 - Willowbroook - SI - clearsky starviewing - see Oct 17 General News ---------- This month is surely the BIGGEST NYC Events in history! The increase comes mainly from the cultural events of Open House new York on October 8th and 9th. This is a Roman circus of tours and visits at over a hundred well-known -- and many lesser-known -- points of interest thruout the City. I was going to list a few selected places, but ALL are so fascinating and exciting, I listed all of them. An other cause for the enlarged NYC Events is the resumption of walking tours by the NYC Urban Park Rangers. With the heat and humidity of summer gone, it's feasible to be outdoors exploring various parts of the City. I include very special citywide events. In past months there was the notice about the Swinging Bridge flood alert, searching of bags at transit stations. Now comes the chaotic closings of certain IRT stations in Lower Manhattan. This derives from the reconstruction of the South Ferry station. In brief, this is a loop track that is too short and constricted for today's traffic and train length. The new station is a stub terminal with straight and longer tracks. The transition from summer to winter schedules completes in October. Lectures in recess are starting up; observing sessions wind down for the frostbite weather. Event news -------- The high point of September with the premiere of the new IMAX movie 'Magnificent desolation' on September 23rd. Plans for the opening were finalized in early September. Not a worry. NYSkiers learned of it thru the NYSkies forum, the place for late news, reminders, details, updates, Several NYSkiers joined the NYC chapter of National Space Society at the Sony IMAX in Lincoln Square to watch Apollo astronauts explore the Moon. I posted a commentary on the film in NYSkies. NYSkiers got their all-in-one briefing about the proximity and opposition of Mars at the NYSkies Astronomy Seminar. This was a repeat of the talk I gave on August 4th, which suffered a low attendance from the obscene summer air. Leftover handouts were given out at the Mars Society of New York;s meeting on September 28. This is an other extra event announced in NYSkies. The Hayden Planetarium celebrates its 70th birthday on Sunday the 2nd! There will be a slide show on the old and new facilities, stories and anecdotes, and a birthday cake for all to feast on. It's free with the regular Museum admission. The Open House New York tours are so numerous I could only list the places and hours. Note that you can visit only a couple on each day due to overlapping hours and geographic dispersion. Pick those grouped together or along a transit line. Some tours run on only one of the two days. Details and contacts for each place are at www.ohny.org. It helps to have street and transit maps in hand. American Association of Variable Star Observers resumes, on October 13-15, its traditional and fabled autumn conference in Massachusetts. It dropped these after the meeting in 2002 to keep just a spring session elsewhere in the world. I give a talk on 'Station at the center of the universe', Grand Central Terminal's astronomy features. There's more to this place than the Sky Ceiling. Lots more. The AAVSO meeting is in Newton, near Boston, a lazy train ride there and back for a low-cost high-content astronomy conference. Amateur Astronomer Association Inc sticks to its despotic ways, elaborated in the companion article 'AAA news'. Thus, certain of its activities carry the risk of harassment and bullying, as marked in the index and annotated in the listings. Sky News ------ Weather generally was cleear enough for routine stargazing in September, with a few extra clear nights. In fact, on Thursday the 29th the City scored its first Milky Way sighting of the fall season! Reports describe the brightest reach in mid Cygnus and a thick peppering of tiny stars elsewhere along the Milky Way path. Friday the 30th seemed as dark as, or a bit darker than, the 29th but so far there are no Milky Way sightings reported. Mars is in easy view in October. He is THE good and bright orange star in Aries. With bright stars around him, you can more comfortably trace his retrograde loop. He entered the loop on the 1st and rounds proximity on the 29th. Be careful! Proximity is NOT opposition!! The two events are geometricly quite different. Opposition comes on November 7th. Check out the timetable for Mars under September 1st. NYSkies ----- Astronomers are exploiting NYSkies as a quick, handy, friendly, and potent source of astronomy news relating to the City. And there is LOTS of astronomy stuff going on around New York! Since it revived on 28 September 2001 (it was interrupted by World Trade Center) NYSkies became the definitive forum and public record for matters bearing on home astronomy in and around New York. Joining NYSkies is easy. Send an empty email to this Yahoogroup maillist at '. Its posts are sent to you in your email and you post to it by email. It's that simple! Or you may go to 'groups.yahoo.com/group/nysky'. If you are already signed up with Yahoo, you go and sign in and then 'join' NYSkies. If not, you have to go thru a silly 'registration' that's a one shot chore, valid for all groups you may eventually join. The files area of NYSkies are accessible only thru the website. AAA NEWS FOR OCTOBER 2005 ----------------------- John Pazmino NYSkies A relatively quiet month at Amateur Astronomers Association Inc. The main activity is the dialog between Tom Clabough and Richard Rosenberg & Dan Harrison in the NYSkies Yahoogroup forum. = = = = = Date: Tue, 30 Aug 2005 16:05:23 -0000 From: "tom_c_nyc" Subject: eviction revoked? richard_rosenberg@i... wrote: This is the case because you are publicly hostile to the AAA. You violated that agreement and must pay the consequences. Rich, the AAA has several members of its Board of Directors who are publicly hostile to individuals. Why is this acceptable? Aren't there any agreements within the AAA leadership that its Board members not be so gd nasty to people? Or that THEY pay the consequences when they violate any such agreements? If you seriously want the healing process to begin, you must address the personality problems within your own organization too. These will not go away by ignoring them, as we recently saw. Tom C. --- In , "Richard Rosenberg" richard_rosenberg@i... wrote: Hi John, Since you're going to put my response to you on NYSkies, I thought I'd put it there directly, saving you the trouble. I have continued to read the communications on this list, and have occasionally contributed myself. If you have a problem with this, I will reluctantly remove myself from the list. I'm afraid you continue to be unwelcome at the Observers Group and other AAA activities. This is the case because you are publicly hostile to the AAA. It is inconsistent and in my view unethical to simultaneously damage an organization and take advantage of its offerings. After your expulsion from the club, I did allow you to remain at a meeting you broke into. This was on the condition that you not use your attendance at the meeting to cause damage to the club. You violated that agreement and must pay the consequences. John, there's nothing I would like better if you could rejoin and contribute to a better AAA. No one denies your knowledge of astronomy and your generosity in sharing that knowledge. But as long as you continue this vendetta (and I understand you're not the only one) I think you and the AAA must go separate ways until you have a change of heart. Rich _____ From: John Pazmino [mailto:john.pazmino@f...] Sent: Monday, August 29, 2005 6:00 PM To: Richard_rosenberg@i... Subject: eviction revoked? Hi, Richy. I'm pleased to notice your letter in NYSkies, copied below. However, I didn't yet get a revocation of your 'eviction' threat from March 2005. Recall that at that time you based your action on a difference of opinion? If I missed the withdrawal, please send it to me again. I will want to acknowledge it in NYSkies. Otherwise, I have no problem with showing both your present and March letter in comparison. = = = = = Clabough questions Richy about the conduct expected of AAA Board members. This is in reaction to Rosenberg's pretention that John Pazmino somehow agreed to forgo his right of criticism to attend Richy's Observing Group meetings. Rosenberg in the original letter from late August, quoted by Clabough, spills out in the very first sentence, 'Since you're going to put my response to you on NYSkies, I thought I'd put it there [in NYSkies] directly, saving you the trouble.' Well! Richard can express his views openly, freely, safely in NYSkies but he reprises against those who do so in AAA. Thank you, my richard, for demonstrating the despotic mindset of AAA Inc!
