To fully understand this, you have to know that the Chancellor, John
Silber, is one of -- perhaps *the* -- most contentious people in Boston.
He is adamant in his views, refusing to budge on what he sees as
necessary, regardless of what other think.

While I admire Mr. Goldin greatly, I wouldn't use him as an example of
a tactful or subtle person. "Contentious" is probably too strong to
describe him, but "stubborn" might not be.

What a pair these two would have made! The administration building at
BU would probably have ended up in orbit. Venus Fire Women would have
been inconspicuous beside this pair.

It's surely not the roll of either Dan Goldin or the Chancellor to make such
determinations, but the roll of the Board? So why was there a problem; the
board should have made a determination.

Glad to see it wasn't because of any allegations about management ability.

And he's worse than Dan Goldin because...?

Value judgement rather than stating facts: I have a good deal of respect
of much of what Silber tries to do. I regret that he is less effective
than he should be due his dismissive attitude to those of other
opinions. (You'd expect the head of a significant university to want to
teach, but he just lectures autocratically.)

Incidentally, I've never stated an opinion about Goldin's abilty to run
a large University. I have only ignorance on this topic. He might be
great, he might be lousy.

A lot of people did vote for him as governor of the state -- not enough
to elect him, but still, quite a few.

Silber is a strong, strong, advocate of MCAS (Massachusetts
Comprehensive Assessment System). This is a state-mandated test required
to receive a high school diploma. In order to get that diploma in this
state, you have to take a test that shows mastery of basic arithmetic,
English grammar, enough History to know that Columbus never met Jesus
Christ, and enough science to know why the sky is blue. To the amazement
of those of us who had high school teachers gives us many tests, the
teacher's union is very much opposed to the MCAS. Silber is seen as the
antichrist to the union leaders.

Of course from talking to my teacher friends their current issue is being
told by the district they are in, "teach to the test."

So, we may be ending up with a generation of very good test takers.
