The first private astronaut?
Joe Strout :
In article , Earl Colby Pottinger wrote: (Steve Dufour) : Space Race 2: Young pilot aims for space By Irene Mona Klotz UNITED PRESS INTERNATIONAL Cape Canaveral, FL, Nov. 30 (UPI) -- Thirty-year-old Larry Clark, already an accomplished commercial airline pilot and flight instructor, is in line to become one of the world's first private astronauts. Sorry, but that title already belongs to the pilot of SS1. Read more carefully, and ignore the subject line added by Steve -- the actual news story just talks of becoming "one of the first" -- after Mike Melville and Brian Binney, of course. I'd say guy #3 would still count as "one of the first" of this new breed of astronauts. You are right, and I did read it, and still missed on my own. Since this is nothing more than what SS1 has done what are they really planning to do to claim a first? They're claiming nothing of the sort. No mention of orbital flights, seems to be a big write-up for someone we don't even know yet if they will really fly. Well, that's journalism for you. If it's a slow news day, you take whatever story you have an write as much as is needed to fill the space. Atleast private space flight is news, that is an improvement from the decade before. The line states "ONE of the first" - not "THE first". :-) Since this is nothing more than what SS1 has done what are they really planning to do to claim a first? Nothing in the article stated *anything* about claiming 'firsts'. Just that they were continuing their efforts. |

John Glenns' flight wasn't as significant as Yuri Gagarins', because he wasn't "first"? Of course, they could lay claim to being the first private *Canadian* astronaut... |
