John Young died yesterday. It is difficult to imagine any other astronaut, past, present or future, having a career as amazing as the life that John Young lived. It was an honor to have known him.

Today, January 6th, marks the first day in human history where there are more deceased moonwalkers than there are living ones. I expect that it will take many many moons for that statistic to turned around. Kind of like Pluto's orbit getting closer than Neptune. You've got to wait an extremely long time for the previous order to go back into place. It will be interesting to see if the number of living moonwalkers reaches zero. That would actually be a very easy prediction to make. I'd put the probability that it won't at less than 1%.

I hope a fitting tribute to John Young gets done. People like Neil Armstrong have a statue. John deserves something big.

You didn't add sci.space.shuttle. Could have been bigger.

Thanks. I have always accessed Usenet via GoogleGroups. Never through a newsreader. And Google has taken steps to degrade the functionality of this service. I expect this was motivated by their desire to drive people away from these forums so they might move to other Google-controlled forums where they can make a buck off you with their ads.

I'm going to have this same problem with a post for Bruce McCandless, so if someone would like to add .shuttle on that too, that would be great. (I could repost as a separate thread, but I'd rather not do that.)

I can also tell because your posts don't limit the width to 80 columns.
Yes, it's a hold over from the "old days" when text terminals were
physically limited to 80 columns in width, but it's still a p.i.t.a. to
have to scroll to the right in a "real newsreader" to read posts that
are formatted this way. :-P

I have been using Eternal September as my (real, free) new server and
MicroPlanet Gravity as my newsreader for years. Free is always good.

Sorry for the column width hassle. I could take care of that manually on my
end. I had been quite impressed with how GoogleGroups was working, say, a
decade ago. Very disappointing what it has become. Maybe someday I will join
in on the real newsreader thing. Thanks for the pointers.

Ok, my next post will have the potential to stir the pot. But those who know
me know that I don't let the psychological inertia of others prevent me from
seeking truth.

My 'real newsreader' will autowrap what I read if it hasn't already
been formatted. That said, I still prefer postings that are set up to
not exceed 72 characters per line (so I get reasonable looking quotes
when I read replies to them).
