Maybe I am beating a dead horse. I have not really seen any critical
evaluations or comparisons of these two optics sets. I am not speaking of
mountings, just optics. Are they both nearly identical in quality and
performance? I know the Meade weighs more, and has a little larger primary,
but what about pure optical performance? And are both these scopes consistent
in their optical quality?

These days, the answer is that a good example of either, will beat a poor
example of the other. The quality of both is very good, especially when
compared to some of the 'dogs' that were made in the past. The variation
involved is tiny in both cases, so it shows just how close the two
companies are...
Generally, there seems to be a tendency for the Meade design to show a
tiny bit more of some aberrations than the Celestron units. The difference
here is that Celestron make their corrector, by sucking it onto a shaped
former, and then grinding, while Meade suck it to a pressure/deflection,
without a former and grind. However the difference is _miniscule_.

Best Wishes
