Rename Space Solar Power to " Wireless Power Transmission"!

The awesome potential of a 'global system of wireless power transmission' should perk up the ears of almost anyone. Anyone that cares about almost anything. Even Tesla would approve, I'm sure of it! SBSP and its enabling wireless power transmission technology could facilitate extremely flexible "energy on demand" for combat units and installations across an entire theater, while significantly reducing dependence on vulnerable over-land fuel deliveries. SBSP could also enable entirely new force structures and capabilities such as ultra long-endurance airborne or terrestrial surveillance or combat systems to include the individual soldier himself. More routinely, SBSP could provide the ability to deliver rapid and sustainable humanitarian energy to a disaster area or to a local population undergoing nation-building activities. SBSP could also facilitate base "islanding" such that each installation has the ability to operate independent of vulnerable ground-based energy delivery infrastructures. In addition to helping American and allied defense establishments remain relevant over the entire 21st Century through more secure supply lines, perhaps the greatest military benefit of SBSP is to lessen the chances of conflict due to energy scarcity by providing access to a strategically secure energy supply." http://www.nss.org/settlement/ssp/library/nsso.htm Then you have to lug around the rolled-up rectenna with you as your force's position changes in time of combat. If you are in a fixed position, you can use conventional diesel generators to provide power, and not have to worry about the big rectenna or solar power satellite being damaged by enemy action. You could really be up the crick without a paddle if they took out a satellite and your whole power supply suddenly died. Back in the 1950's the Army actually came up with a completely off-the-wall concept for using nuclear energy to power whole convoys of vehicles. A lead vehicle would carry a portable nuclear reactor in it, and wires would lead back to tanks and trucks that trailed it, they themselves being powered by diesel-electric drive systems. When on the move as a convoy, they would use electrical power sent to them via the wires from the front reactor vehicle, and once on-position generate their own electrical power via their diesel engines. The plan was quickly dropped once it was realized that the destruction of the lead reactor vehicle or the train of wiring that connected it to the vehicles following it could leave the whole convoy deep in enemy territory with insufficient diesel fuel to get back to friendly territory. The solution was obvious; the convoy needed to carry enough diesel fuel with it to both get into and out of enemy territory with no electrical power from the reactor vehicle if necessary...at which point the reactor vehicle became superfluous, and the vehicles could run on straight diesel power with both a weight and complexity savings over the diesel-electric drive. I will say one thing for the plan though... it would take one mighty brave Soviet soldier to shoot a vehicle with a nuclear reactor in it with an RPG-7 and see what happened next. :-D Pat |

If I shot at that thing I would make sure I was upwind of it. Knowing the Soviets, they would probably show the soldiers pictures of the ting and tell them to destroy it if they saw one...neglecting to mention that there was a reactor inside of it. Pat |

John you describe yourself primarily as 'an advocate'. I find this comment extremely amusing consider the world is full of 'advocates' that for multiple decades have been trying to prove a link between EM radiation from power lines and cancer. And in the last decade several 'interest groups' have been furiously involved in funding studies that attempt to prove a link between the minuscule amount of EM radiation coming from a cell phone and cancer. Now you advocate upping the ante by orders of magnitude. Good luck with that one.... Dave |
