Again, that quote from his famous University of Leyden lecture was a
statement of pure caprice and fiat, derived from the then-in-vogue
Lorentzian 'rigid lattice' concept of the 'ether'.

Notice that ten years hence, by 1930, Uncle Albert had recanted his
earlier "no motion" edict.. tacitly acknowledging the medium's
propensity to _flow_.

But in the interim, during the 1920s, he had unwittingly unleashed the
'no medium' / space-as-void juggernaut which almost overnight
entrenched itself as the bedrock axiom of science. For whatever
reason, he did nothing to stop it and went along with it _while
knowing full well better_. Like a frankenstein of his own creating, it
became his own taskmaster till the end of his days.. with the
exception of a late-stage Appendix wherein he cryptically alludes to
the fact that space is not a void but a "field".
