If you need this sort of gizmos to identify constellations astronomy
ain't for you.

This was my thought as well.
The idea was to give it as a xmas pressy to a complete beginner who hasn't
got anyone close at hand who can help.

For a similar amount you could get the book "Turn left at Orion" and a
small planisphere, less gimmicky and more useful to a beginner.

I'd suggest you have a look at the SPA and BAA shops too.

If it were for me, I'd like the RAS Astronomical Diary 2007 and the BAA
Handbook 2007. ;o)

I'd agree - if it were for me... but what about a teenager not much into
reading?

I would support you, planisphres can be confusing with reverals etc; not to
the likes of us, of course!

And if s/he quickly grows out of it, it will have done a valuable job

So nobody has any idea if the star pocket is good enough to get a beginner
up and running without too much frustration i.e. so that they give up soon
after?
I conceed that there might be cheaper and more traditional methods.
I also conceed that the star pocket might have a short life once the user
graduates - but will it get them started?
