They are infra-red countermeasures systems. They are designed to
throw off heat-seeking missles. I believe you can find similar
installations on the 747s that serve as Air Force One.

You might consider posting to one of the other sci.space groups since
this one is now almost entirely spam. Not only spam, but bad spam!!!!

Its not all spam here, a few maybe but if you see more than a few adverts
then your server is rubbish!

I don't use a server to read this group. I use google groups. A pity
they don't choose to deal with the patently off-topic spam. Oh well.
