ASTRO: No astro, bad weather (so OT freaky storm/front photograph)
"Shawn" wrote in message . .. TheCroW wrote: Bad, bad weather for a while now here in Holland, so no looking at the nightskies here. Yesterday was the worst: (and here comes the OT part ;-) ) I was looking out my windows, the sky was black, humidity high and high temperatures ... and then suddenly this monster came rolling towards here. Don't know the English for this kind of formation but things were really swirling in and out the cloud. Only after this passed there was a VERY heavy rain. The whole thing was too big to capure in 1 shot, so I took 3 and stiched them together. Did some work on it to get some details from the cloud/front. It was very impressive (and freaky) to see it roll and develope .... maybe not special when you live in Tornado Alley but for here it is special. The photograph is taken from my appartment, overlooking the centre of Haarlem, city near Amsterdam. Nice picture! Looks like something from the movie "Independence Day" :-) Lots more similar pics from the American west here (I'm not affiliated, I just like the site): http://www.extremeinstability.com/2004.htm Shawn That Nebraska supercell has the best developed structure I've ever seen in a thunderstorm. Amazing. George |

The only clear weather we've had for the past 3 or 4 weeks has been after mid-night during the work-week. I don't even have any old image data to process (except for a few poor moon shots). Not if you're under it! Then it is downright scary. Living in the
woods makes it even worse. We get one or two a year here. It means repairs to house, you hope the boat survives and you spend the next day or two working with neighbors cutting up trees so you can reach the road. Several days later you have power again. But until you clear the road the power company can't even get in to work on the lines. Rick Richard Crisp wrote: that's beautiful! "TheCroW" wrote in message ... But until you clear the road the power company can't even get in to work on the lines. that reminds me of hurricanes I experienced growing up on the Texas Gulf Coast. Usually power is out for about 7-10 days and it is hot as hell and very humid: and you get to cut down trees, clear roads, repair roofs, fences etc, all with the sun beating down in the late summer/early fall. Hurricanes aren't a problem up here! Tornados are weaker (usually) than in Nebraska where I lived until a couple years ago and storms like this one are far less common but living deep in the woods they are a lot more trouble! I had to design the roof to survive them. So used steel rather than wood even though it isn't all that big, 17'x 12'. Rick |
