I'm serious now. Art Bell sent me his time machine plans.

Examples:

Good request: "Prevent cancellation of Dyna-Soar program."

Bad request: "Prevent Dan Goldin's parents from meeting."

Worse request: "Make $1M investment in 1990s startup company selling Dan
Goldin bobblehead dolls online."

Actually, you hit on my favorite, right here. As well as the delta
winged X-15 variant.

Doing some of Phil Bono's VTOL concepts (not the mega-rockes like
SASSTO right away, even the small one that would take a Gemini into low
Earth orbit and return intact would've been adequate) or Chrysler's SERV
would've been desirable, too.

On the private side, someone ponying up enough money for Gary
Hudson's Phoenix.

Not bad examples. But let's go back to 5 October, 1957:

1). Don't form NASA.

2). Provide substantial funding for NACA, JPL, ABMA and NRL
for *competitive* programs. Base follow-on funding on results.

3). Offer guaranteed markets for low-cost space access by
private entrepreneurs. But: no tickee, no washee. Payments
for results only--not promises. Perhaps provide tax incentives
and reduced barriers to raising money from the public--with
more reliance on fraud prosecution and less reliance on
trying to preclude fraud with cumbersome, expensive,
overregulation.

Given that information, what might've they done differently?
Espically as there was still the expectation that the shuttle would be
flying a few years earlier than it did, giving them a shot at rendezvous
and re-boost.

Might have argued for a Skylab-5 mission to include a reboost.

Might have gone for a higher reboost on Skylab-4 if possible.

Might have re-activated Skylab earlier and put it in a low-drag orientation
even sooner.

Assassinate John F. Kennedy in 1960. Better make it January 1960; that will
solve the Vietnam problem also.

Sure will. It'll put either Nixon or LBJ in charge for the Cuban Missile
Crisis. Nobody in the radioactive ruins of Washington DC will be at all
interested in Vietnam.
