If I were you, I'd bake a big batch of brownies and visit a friend who has
broadband and a CD burner.

Cool!

You haven't by chance come across anything about Explorer 1 have you?
I've tried searching myself, but I haven't got to grips with the
search engine yet.

Explorer I was pre-NASA. It also wasn't NACA (National Advisory
Comittee on Aeronautics), so the best place, as Rusty's pointed out,
would be the Redstone Arsenal Monograph files.

There is a whole batch of fascinating space-realted stuff on the NACA
Tech Reportsd Server, though. You can, by some judicious browsing,
follow the development of lifting re-entry vehicles from the Sanger
Silberbird to the X-20 and hte Lifting Bodies.

Recently they've done a massive data dump of something like 10,000
documents, from roughly 1918 through 1958. The documents are
available, but they aren't cataloged in the search system.
I've been doing some bin-diving there - if I find anything interesting
I'll post it.

I got "Challenge to Apollo" that way.
That one on the Ranger program is a bit hefty also.

Heh. I just moved into new accomodation, with a share of a broadband
line. There's now 2.5GB of stuff to sort, and another GB or so queued...
and more to come... ah, well, at least it'll give me reading for the
next couple of years.

Some of the SSF stuff is very interesting.
